A Little About Everyday Function and Aging
Many people eliminate normal everyday movements from their daily routines (such as walking downhill) or a specific movement from their exercise regime (such as squats) when these movements become difficult and painful to perform. When this occurs, these normal everyday movements slowly become non-existent in your self-organization; your life.

When you stop performing a certain movement and lose that function from your movement repertoire the physical structures associated with this movement (your muscles, bones tendons etc.) become weak and frail and have greater potential for injury. This is when optimal human functioning starts to decline and the process of “usual” aging begins.

A Little About Injury
Often when our body mechanics and mode of moving through space is not as efficient as it could be our soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursa etc.) take the brunt of this inefficiency. Often we end up compensating in some way, such as favouring one leg, to take the stress off of an area that is becoming painful. This invariable cycle of muscular imbalance, stiffness and pain, leads to more compensation, potentially resulting in injury.

A person may heal and recover from an injury or compensation by rest and therapeutic means, but if the mechanics that led to the injury are never addressed the likelihood of such an injury returning are substantial. This is when chronic injuries enter our lives.

Re-Learning
The biggest element in becoming efficient and moving in the best way possible for you is to learn how to organize your skeleton in movement so that your large muscles do the large jobs, and the small muscles do the small jobs. When our skeletal organization is not as optimal as it could be, the duties of our muscles can become confused and this is when imbalances, strains, stiffness and poor recovery occurs.
